Felony Attempted Theft Charge Reduced to Misdemeanor

Posted On: April 16th, 2014

A young man in his early 20s, about to head to Army boot camp, almost ended his military career before it began. He got very drunk and through a series of events, he and a friend found themselves on the wrong local campus. In their extremely inebriated state, they started going into cars and were spotted by a student who then promptly reported them to the police. They were then arrested and charged with felony attempted theft. The case was then scheduled in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

This young man was confused, embarrassed and terrified. He was not raised that way, had never had a criminal charge and after speaking with his recruiter, realized he was in extreme danger of being rejected from the Army before he even made it to boot camp. Due to his age and not being from the Columbus area, his parents sought help on his behalf with the felony attempted theft charge. They were referred to the attorneys with LHA.

We represented our client and after a number of court dates, negotiated a reduction of the felony attempted theft charge to a misdemeanor criminal damaging offense. Additionally, there would be no probation. The misdemeanor and no probation resolution was the only way that our client would be able to attend boot camp and begin his military career. We were able to achieve that for him and prevent one drunken evening from potentially altering the rest of his life and ending his dream of being in the US military. He was beyond grateful.
